Next time you’re trying to decide if you should do something, ask ourself if it’s a hell yes. When something’s a hell yes, you know it in your gut. It’s an immediate response. If you have to think about it, it’s not a hell yes. In that case, consider saying no thanks.
It’s hard to say no. But every choice you make is taking up space in your life that some other choice might fill. If you agree to serve on a committee, you’re giving up time and energy you could spend on your gardening. Or your poetry. Or any other passion.
Make room for someone else to say yes
Sometimes we say yes because we feel bad saying no. We’re worried about disappointing the person who asked. But they’ll just move down the list and ask someone else. And maybe for that person, this thing is a hell yes.
Maybe it’s even a little egotistical to think we’re the only person who can be the answer to that question. Surely there are other people who would do a great job giving that keynote address, coaching that middle school team, organizing that protest or baking those bake sale cookies.
Make your calendar nice and roomy
When you start saying no to more things, you create a much more comfortable calendar with lots of open space. That give you the flexibility to take on last-minute opportunities that come up. And the ability to live a relaxed life. It gives you the luxury of time.
